Must be tough to be Dan Marino these days. After all, not only did Brett Favre break his touchdown record earlier this season, but yesterday Favre broke Marino’s yardage record, too.
I’ve always felt for Marino. Such a great quarterback, in the league so long and a prolific passer, and never got a Superbowl ring. I remember when he retired, I thought, well at least he’s got the records. Those will stand a while.
“A while” turned out to be just over a decade. Not bad.
If Marino is sad (or in guy terms: nostalgic) about his records being broken, at least he can take comfort in the fact that another great representative for the league is the one doing it. He doesn’t have to listen to some overrated hotshot who think he’s a good quarterback because he has good receivers and a good defensive line, he doesn’t have to see his record get snatched by some troublemaker who engages in criminal behavior off the field…
… no, Marino can (at the very least) take pride in the fact that another great competitor is the one who now holds the records he once did. Someone who looked up to Marino, and is humble enough to give the man his props while at the same time taking his own. After the game Favre said:
"I've said this all along: I've never considered myself to be in the same league as Dan Marino," Favre said. "What a great passer, maybe the greatest passer ever.”
