Fans Helping Their Teams (At Least in their Own Mind)

So…. The Packer game starts in a couple hours, and…

I’m nervous.

As nervous as a fan can be.  I just about panicked earlier because I couldn’t find my Packer shirt.

Here’s the thing:  I have LOTS of Packer shirts, so I have others I could have chosen.

But this one’s important.  This is the one I’ve worn all year.  Every game.  If I wore a different shirt and my team lost… well, I’d never forgive myself.  This is the play-offs, after all.

Superstitious you say?  Perhaps.

But I’d prefer to think about it as simply being a good fan.

Maybe it comes from watching your favorite team with hope and crossed fingers year after year for MANY YEARS.  You get in the habit of simply trying to help.  After all, if the coach drafts a bunch of non-performers, at the very least you can wear the right socks or make the same dip week after week… all in an effort to help your team.

And sure, now my favorite team is in the playoffs, with the best team I’ve seen in a very long time and with the best quarterback I’ve seen ever. And they got to the play offs because they worked for it.  They earned it.

But I can’t help thinking that as a fan all my good vibes and superstitions might have helped, too.

At least, that’s one small part of why being a fan is so fun.  The other, of course, is having a day like today.  Where you sit back after years of watching other teams in the play offs, and enjoy the vibe of having the guys you’ve been pulling for… for so very long….finally getting the chance they deserve.

And you do it wearing your favorite Packer shirt.  Of course
